Slab-built ceramics have a long and rich lineage across cultures, yet they remain one of the most adaptable techniques in contemporary studio practice. Whether crisp and architectural or softly formed with the memory of the hand, slab work invites makers to think in planes, edges, folds and seams — much like building construction but using clay.

Slab-building must be the core forming process and remain visibly evident in the final work.

The intention is to honour the technique itself — its inherent structure, surface and character. 

Submissions that obscure or heavily modify the slab to the point that the method is unrecognisable may not be accepted.

We encourage:

·Edges, joins, seams and overlaps that show the maker’s hand

·Constructed forms where shape arises from planes, bending and assembly

·Work that demonstrates confident technical handling of slabs of all thickness

·Both functional and sculptural work, provided slab construction is central

SELECTION

Whilst Ceramic Spotlight is a non-Juried exhibition (i.e. there are no awards), there will be a process of curatorial selection based on your images and descriptions. Curation involves the selection and arrangement of works based on their technical and artistic quality, relevance to the exhibition theme/requirements, and contribution to the overall coherence, balance, and impact of the exhibition. The artworks will be selected and curated by CWC Chair, Rosh Sewpersad,  who conceptualised this new annual exhibition.

A maximum of 3 individual pieces per member may be submitted. No sets.

Who may Submit

The exhibition will be open to all current Ceramics Western Cape members. Whether you're a wheel thrower, hand-builder, slip-caster and anything in between, you are welcome to experiment with the selected spotlight technique and submit your creations.

New members are welcome to join in order to participate.

Please include with your entry:

1. Good-quality photographs of each work, one of which must contain a matchbox for scale.

2. Title, clay body, firing method, a short, punchy description of the piece, including how the technique of slab-building has been highlighted.

3. Selling Price = ([Price you want] divided by 0.7) (i.e. accounting for 30% commission). Note that the aims of the exhibition are to provide members with an opportunity to exhibit their works in public and to promote interest in ceramics.

4. Be realistic in your pricing. At what price point would you purchase a work, especially knowing the production costs? Overpriced works don't sell and don't promote ceramics as collectible amongst the general public. We want to create a ceramic-buying market.
