About Ceramic Spotlight

This exhibition is created with one purpose — to shine a focused light on a particular ceramic discipline, technique or approach each year. From handbuilding traditions passed down for generations to cutting-edge glaze chemistry, from alternative firings to contemporary surface experimentation, Ceramic Spotlight aims to explore the many pathways clay can take from idea to object.

Each edition of this new show will highlight a specific theme, skill set or material process, giving members the opportunity to dig deeper into a chosen technique and present work that reflects mastery, experimentation, learning or innovation.

Within our community exists a remarkable range of knowledge and practice. Some of us coil, some slab-build, some slip cast. Some of us chase elegant reduction glazes, others thrill in the unpredictability of Raku. Ceramic Spotlight honours this diversity — and celebrates the skill behind each approach.

By rotating themes annually, we hope to:

Build a platform for learning and exchange

Inspire members to try new methods and refine familiar ones

Showcase the immense creative range of South African ceramics

Create an archive of technique-centred exhibitions over time
