Functional Forms will shine a spotlight on the artistry and
innovation found in functional ceramics. It is an invitation to explore vessels and objects
that serve a purpose — whether humble or experimental — and to elevate function into
beauty.
What we encourage members to consider:
As makers, we know that crafting functional ware demands both aesthetic sensitivity and technical skill. When creating work for this exhibition, we invite you to reflect on:
1. Functionality
Does the piece work as intended? Does the lid fit comfortably, does the jug pour cleanly, does the teacup sit well in the hand?
2. Durability
Functional ware must withstand daily use. Consider the strength of handles, rim thickness, glaze fit, thermal shock and food-safety implications.
3. Comfort & Ergonomics
How does the user interact with the piece? Is it balanced, comfortable to hold, easy to use?
4. Aesthetics
Function need not limit imagination — let it guide it. Consider surface, form, proportion, texture, colour and craftsmanship.
5. Innovation & Delight
What makes your piece unique? Can you interpret utility in a way that surprises, challenges or delights the user?
Who may Submit
Functional Forms will be open to all current Ceramics Western Cape members. Whether you are a wheel-thrower, handbuilder, slip-caster or sculptural maker looking to explore function for the first time — this exhibition is for you.
Cost
Each member may submit up to 3 works*. There will be a fee of R50 per work submitted. Therefore if you submit the maximum of 3 works, the fee will be R150.
*You may submit a cohesive set as a single work, as long as there are no duplicate pieces (multiples) submitted. For example, only submit a single cup, single saucer, single sugar bowl, single milk jug and a single teapot as a tea set; only submit a single side plate, single dinner plate and a single bowl as a dinner set. This is due to logistical constraints.
We apologise that this historical building does not have accessibility features for visitors with disabilities.
